Texas Records Most Hail Claims Nationally
A three-year analysis by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) found that Texas recorded the most insurance claims related to hailstorms in the United States between January 1, 2016, and December 31, 2018. Over this time, there were 2.89 million hail loss claims in the nation, of which Texas accounted for more than 811,000 claims. Texas also reported the highest amount of hail claims for 2016 and 2017 individually.
Total nationwide claims from hail loss increased 18% between 2016 and 2017, then decreased 31% between 2017 and 2018. Over the three-year period, claims decreased 19% between 2016 and 2018. The month of May was most active for hail claims, with an average of 203,296 claims filed over the three-year period. Other summer months, June (178,881), April (164,232), March (153,716), and July (96,947) were also top months for hail claims.
Several cities in Texas were among the top cities with hail loss claims nationwide. San Antonio was the top city, representing 3% of total hail claims in the United States. Plano, Fort Worth, McKinney, and Arlington were also among the top 10 cities.
