NFIP Pays Out More Than $280M in Imelda Flood Claims

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced that more than $280 million in National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) claims have been paid out to Texans following Tropical Storm Imelda. Of that total, nearly $82 million is from flood insurance claim advance payments, which can be dispersed days after an event to jumpstart recovery efforts.

Tropical Storm Imelda occurred September 17-23, 2019, near the Texas coast. Governor Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration in response that includes several impacted counties, and President Donald Trump issued a federal disaster declaration that includes some severely affected counties, as well.

According to FEMA, the tropical storm resulted in more than 10,600 flood insurance claims by Texas homeowners, businesses, and renters. Counties designated for federal assistance include Chambers, Harris, Jefferson, Liberty, Montgomery, Orange, and San Jacinto.
