New Flood Maps to Take Effect in Harris County

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced that new flood maps will become effective on November 15, 2019, for Harris County, Texas, which encompasses the city of Houston.

It is important for consumers to understand flood risks so that they can determine which insurance option is best. Additionally, local leaders can use the new maps to create building standards and make development decisions that will mitigate future flood risk.

“Keep in mind, flooding is the number one natural disaster in the United States, and most homeowner’s insurance policies may not cover the effects of flooding,” said Tony Robinson, FEMA Region 6 Administrator. “I encourage everyone to purchase flood insurance because more than 25 percent of flood damages occur outside the Special Flood Hazard Area.”

Residents are encouraged to contact their local floodplain administrator to review the new maps and determine if they are in a low to moderate or high-risk flood zone.
