Governor Abbott Provides Updates and Guidelines for COVID-19
On June 22, Governor Abbott addressed the State regarding updates on Texas’ continued response to COVID-19. The state is taking several steps to ensure the safety of citizens by increasing testing in hot spots, increasing the enforcement of health and safety regulations, and collaborating with hospitals to ensure they have the necessary resources to treat patients tested positive with COVID-19.
“COVID-19 is now spreading at an unacceptable rate in the state of Texas, and it must be corralled,” said Governor Abbott. ” The governor is urging the state of Texas to follow the minimum guidelines and protocols issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) for all businesses and individuals.
The governor also expressed the capacity of hospitals are not at their full extent, however; an additional “stay at home order” could be issued as a last resort if numbers continue to rise in the coming weeks. Abbott further states masks will not be required by the state since local authorities are able to better determine risk and regulations within their own jurisdiction. That being said, local authorities will be left to determine if mask policies are required in businesses, local events, and congregations of individuals.
DSHS Commissioner Dr. John Hellerstedt states the people of Texas need to better protect themselves and their communities. Texas must take precautions now to avoid increasing trends. Governor Abbott also received several questions regarding the balance of personal freedoms with public safety (i.e. wearing masks). Abbott responded that the increase in cases since Memorial Day has shown the necessity to provide higher levels of enforcement, but the spread of COVID-19 may differentiate in various areas. This leaves local officials to address the spread and regulations of masks from small towns to big cities.
